As another Keg King Cup draws to a close we want to thank everyone who took part.
From Sponsors to entrants, winners and our esteemed panel of Keg King staff judges, it has been a fantastic experience from which we have learned as our annual Keg King Cup Competition grows.
To HPA and Voyager we are thrilled and most grateful for your generous prize contributions that we know this year’s winners are going to love. For those of you who don’t already know it, these two companies produce and provide some of the most flavourful, freshest ingredients to the Australian brewing community so if you weren’t lucky enough to enjoy one of the prize packs, be sure to add their offerings to your next brew day to take your beers to the next level!
Knock out competitions are rough. This style of comp pits great beer against great beer and only one can move forward based on the votes.
For those of you who missed the results, we once again congratulate the top brewers for their entries:
1st Place
Peter Gannon
Winter Berry Delight
2nd Place
Mark Chapman
Winter Dreaming Cold IPA
3rd Place
Ashleigh Maree
Into The Shadows Fruity Dark Beer
This year’s final surprise was really unexpected, highlights the good nature of the homebrewing community and is also an outcome we’ll address going forward.
Thank you to 1st place entrant Peter Gannon for his generous offer to accept only the top spot and not first AND second place which means more entrants could enjoy the award spotlight.
That’s going to now be the rule going forward. Brewers winning in two places will only be awarded for their top (highest) position.
This means that more entrants can enjoy the rewards and keeps the Keg King Cup fun for everyone.
Get ready for more Keg King Cup fun again next year in 2025!
To everyone who took the time to enter and send in your beers, we thank you for the opportunity to let us sample something awesome.
Brew On !
Cheers
The Team at Keg King
Entries Feedback
Being a knock out competition and not a style judging competition means that great beers could be paired against other great beers but only the one with the most votes from the judging panel would win.
We did take a few notes on what we liked and what we thought about the beers across the top eight. These notes were recorded as comments from what our staff judges found in the beers they were tasting. It’s worth mentioning that the quality of the beers overall was really good plus there was a lot of creativity in the names and styles we judged so once again thank you to the brewers for entering.
Entries with notes are as follows:
LP05
Good roast flavour, slightly astringent, maybe a bit thick – heavy bodied – pours like syrup – nice head retention on pour fading to thin
WB24
Great black forest aroma, good cherry hints. Could use more chocolate flavour in the malt – chocolate cherry aroma really drives this one.
1QLD
Very clean and crisp, very drinkable. Not as original as the other entries but stated it’s what the brewer likes to drink no matter what the season. No fault to speak of. Exceptionally clean, neutral flavour, crisp malt flavour, subdued balanced hop bitterness with hop spice note and insanely clean finish. This was stunning and clear as glass. Some judges felt there is no way this could be homebrewed due to the clarity. Very well presented. Very moreish.
LP03
Good fruit aroma and flavour. Very well balanced and well rounded beer. Clean fermentation character with nice ester profile of plum and red fruit pairs well with the malt sweetness.
AN49
Great raspberry flavour. Oily mouth feel, with a sticky fruit/ raspberry finish. Aroma of raspberry really nice as it warms. Dry malt character of toasted brown bread.
MC26
Perfect hop aroma and hop flavour, very clear and crisp. This was a standout in the competition. No head retention though. Exquisite hop driven beer with amazing clear appearance once it warms a bit. Hop combination is on point with orange peel, pear, strawberry and dank pine forest. Hop zesty-ness lingers leaving a clean refreshing mouthfeel. Very moreish.
LP04
Nice grain malt flavour, great colour, well balanced. Easy drinking beer with some oomph. Definitely want more of this. Finish is clean but slightly sweet.
BESTBEER1
Great colour and concept. Diacetyl presence overwhelming flavour and dominating the overall experience. Brilliant looking beer, good head retention colour and clarity. Carbonation on point but mouthfeel is slightly slick.
